New Zealand retained their Olympic title in the women’s rugby sevens by beating Canada 19-12.

Canada led 12-7 at halftime, but the reigning champions fought back thanks to tries from Michaela Blyde and Stacey Waaka.

It is the third rugby sevens Olympic medal for the Black Ferns, having also won silver in Rio 2016.

The US won bronze – their first Olympic rugby sevens medal – by beating Australia 14-12.

With Australia close to winning, Alex Sedrick from the USA broke free from the defence and tied the score with a try, before converting to decide the match.

Great Britain, who were knocked out in the quarter-finals by the United States on Monday, finished seventh after beating eighth-placed Ireland 28-12.
