Monday Night Football: Joe Burrow, Jayden Daniels First LSU QB Game in 43 Years

Week 3 of the NFL season features a Monday Night Football doubleheader. First, the Jacksonville Jaguars take on the Buffalo Bills beginning at 7:30 p.m. ET on ESPN. At 8:15 p.m. ET on ABC, the Washington Commanders take on the Cincinnati Bengals.

The Commanders-Bengals game will feature something NFL fans haven’t seen in decades: a showdown between two former LSU quarterbacks. Cincinnati’s Joe Burrow won the Heisman Trophy and national championship with the Tigers in 2019. Washington rookie Jayden Daniels won the Heisman in 2023 before going second overall in the 2024 NFL Draft.

This is how unusual it is for two LSU Tigers quarterbacks to face each other in the NFL.

LSU Quarterback Games in NFL History

Monday Night Football marks the fifth time that two former LSU quarterbacks have played each other in NFL history. The previous four times were between the Miami Dolphins and Baltimore Colts in 1980 and 1981.

Those games featured former Tigers Bert Jones and David Woodley, who started for Baltimore and Miami, respectively. The two played each other four times between 1980 and 1981, with Miami winning three of the games. In the nearly 43 years since then, the NFL has not seen two former Tiger quarterbacks face off against each other.

LSU Quarterbacks in the NFL

Thirteen LSU quarterbacks have thrown at least 50 passes in the NFL. Hall of Famer Y.A. Tittle was the first to do so after being drafted into the NFL in 1948.

Daniels and Burrow are the two most recent. Here are the other 10 and the teams they played for:

  • Jones (Baltimore Colts, Los Angeles Rams)

  • Stan Humphries (Washington, San Diego Chargers)

  • Woodley (Dolphins, Pittsburgh Steelers)

  • Matt Flynn (Green Bay Packers, Oakland Raiders, Seattle Seahawks)

  • MC Reynolds (Chicago Cardinals, Washington, Buffalo Bills, Raiders)

  • Tom Hodson (New Orleans Saints, New England Patriots)

  • JaMarcus Russell (Raiders)

  • Warren Rabb (Bills, Detroit Lions)

  • Alan Risher (Packers, Tampa Bay Buccaneers)

  • Zach Mettenberger (Tennessee Titans)

2024 NFL Starting Quarterbacks From Same University

It is common for quarterbacks from the same college to play against each other in the NFL. The most recent matchup was last year’s NFC Wild Card playoffs between former Oklahoma quarterbacks Jalen Hurts (Philadelphia) and Baker Mayfield (Tampa Bay).

At the time of publication, seven universities had multiple starting quarterbacks in the NFL:
