MLB issues Mets, Braves celebration warning ahead of doubleheader

ATLANTA – It was unclear whether the Mets would celebrate Monday. What was clearer was when such a celebration would take place.

Before a playoff-clinching doubleheader at Truist Park, Major League Baseball told the Mets and Braves to postpone the champagne-spraying theater until after the second game, Mets manager Carlos Mendoza said.

Each club would clinch a postseason spot with a win in the opener before a second match played 40 minutes after the finale of the first.

By postponing the celebration, Major League Baseball would ensure that the winner of the first game would not take the field for the second game after a raucous and alcohol-filled party.

Not allowing the clubhouse festivities must have been appreciated by the Diamondbacks, who are gunning for one team to win the doubleheader – which was their only route to October baseball.

If the Mets and Braves split the doubleheader, they would both be in the playoffs and Arizona would be left out.
