MANCHESTER, England (AP) — Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes has had a three-match ban overturned by the Football Association following his red card against Tottenham on Sunday.

United said on Tuesday it had successfully upheld an unfair dismissal appeal by the governing body after Fernandes was sent off for a dangerous tackle on James Maddison.

Fernandes is said to be suspended for the Premier League matches against Aston Villa, Brentford and West Ham.

The Portuguese international was shown a straight red in the 42nd minute against Spurs, after which United lost 3-0.

“Nobody wants to be sent off, it’s not a good feeling,” Fernandes said on Sunday. “I didn’t choose the studs. It is never a red card. Even James Maddison said when he got up that it wasn’t a red card.”

Fernandes appeared to slip in a tackle in Tottenham’s half but then lifted his foot and caught Maddison on his shin in a studs-up challenge.

Referee Christopher Kavanagh immediately waved a red card.
