Man City 3-1 West Ham (Aug 31, 2024) Match Analysis

Erling Haaland’s second consecutive hat-trick gave Manchester City a 3-1 win over West Ham United on Saturday, continuing the champions’ perfect start to the Premier League season.

The Norwegian striker missed an early chance but made no mistake in the second, calmly firing past Alphonse Areola to put City ahead in the 10th minute after Bernardo Silva had robbed Lucas Paquetá in midfield.

West Ham equalised against the run of play after 18 minutes when Rúben Dias turned a cross from Jarrod Bowen into his own net, before Haaland restored City’s lead after half an hour with a powerful shot from close range past Areola.

Haaland nearly provided the assist in the 38th minute, when he made a beautiful pass to Rico Lewis, but the defender fired the ball over the bar.

Kevin De Bruyne almost scored a third goal just before half-time as City threatened to extend their lead, but his free-kick from the edge of the penalty area went over the roof of the net.

West Ham almost levelled shortly after the break with a swift counter-attack when Mohammed Kudus hit the post. The chance sparked excitement among the home crowd and West Ham players alike.

But Haaland secured victory with another fine goal in the 83rd minute, latching onto a through ball from Matheus Nunes and firing over substitute Lukasz Fabianski.

The striker scored his seventh goal in three games this season and his 70th Premier League goal in 69 games after last week’s three-pointer against Ipswich Town.

He almost scored his fourth goal in the fifth minute of injury time, but Fabianski saved his shot from a difficult angle before Éderson Crysencio denied Summerville a consolation goal in the closing stages.

City have won three games from three and have quickly opened up a two-point lead over last season’s runners-up Arsenal. Arsenal drew 1-1 at home to Brighton & Hove Albion on Saturday.

West Ham have three points from three games.
