Taylor Swift Wins Artist of the Year

It’s official: Taylor Swift is the artist of the year!

At the 2024 MTV Video Music Awards on Wednesday, September 11, the 34-year-old pop star won the Artist of the Year award, beating out Ariana Grande, Sabrina Carpenter, Bad Bunny, Eminem and SZA.

As the awards show took place at New York’s UBS Arena, Swift’s latest win was announced during a commercial break. She also led in nominations this year with 12 total, mostly for “Fortnight,” her Department of Tormented Poets single with Post Malone. The accompanying music video for the hit played Association of Dead PoetsEthan Hawke and Josh Charles.

So far, Swift has won awards for best collaboration, best pop, song of the summer, best direction and best editing, all thanks to her milestone year and the black-and-white video for “Fortnight.”

Malone, 29, and Swift jointly accepted the award for best collaboration at the start of the show, with Swift thanking the 10-time Grammy nominee for his contributions to the duet and “taking the opportunity to thank and honor the people who worked so hard with me on this video.”

“There’s a really clear reason why Post Malone is the favorite person to collaborate with in music,” Swift said. “It’s because you’re so ridiculously talented. You’re so versatile, and you’re the most down-to-earth person.”

Malone, who was “absolutely speechless,” raved about her partner and “the amount of work, care and love she puts into everything she does” during their joint performance.

Swift was also an active participant in the crowd at UBS Arena throughout the night, dancing to performances from the likes of Karol G and Katy Perry. At one point, she was seen singing along to “Teenage Dream” alongside pal Suki Waterhouse, before belting out “ET” and “California Gurls.”

The 2024 MTV VMAs air September 11 at 8:00 p.m. ET/PT, live from UBS Arena in New York City.
