The three-time Paralympian, who lives in Fairfield, Iowa, won the gold medal Sunday afternoon at the Paris Paralympics in the men’s individual compound archery competition. It is Stutzman’s second Paralympic medal after taking silver in London in 2012. This is his fourth time competing at the Games.

Stutzman, 41, had a tough road to the podium. The archer, who was born without arms, finished the ranking round in 19th place before the elimination round began. But that low placing didn’t faze him, as he defeated Mexico’s Victor Viveros Sardina in the round of 32, Finland’s Jere Forsberg in the round of 16, Team Great Britain’s Nathan MacQueen in the quarterfinals and China’s He Zihao in the semifinals.

To reach the gold medal match, he needed two shoot-offs, an overtime method in which each competitor must shoot once and the archer whose shot is closest to the center of the target advances.
