Increased chance of storms this long weekend for parts of Arizona

PHOENIX (AZFamilie) — Monsoon storms are expected to be strong this Labor Day weekend, although they will be concentrated in the higher elevations of Arizona.

Expect a warm Friday in the Valley, with morning temperatures in the 80s rising to 110 degrees Friday under sunny skies. That’s about six degrees above normal for this time of year.

The coming weekend looks dry for the Valley, with a chance of storms around 10% or less. Gusty winds are possible from nearby storms, but the chance of rain is fairly low. Expect temperatures to peak around 108 each afternoon through Monday.

Storms are likely in the higher elevations this holiday weekend, with the highest chances Saturday and Sunday. Slow-moving storms can produce heavy rain and flash flooding. Monsoon moisture begins to be replaced by drier air Monday, and storm chances drop to the mild category for most mountain communities by Labor Day.

The second half of next week looks set to bring significant warming to Arizona, with temperatures in the valley likely to top 110 degrees beginning Wednesday.
