Hurricane Milton makes landfall

Hurricane Milton remains in Category 1 status as it currently begins to leave Florida.

It made landfall in Siesta Key around 8 a.m. Wednesday evening as a Category 3.

Rescue officials are currently working in areas where people are trapped by high tides.

Deaths due to a tornado outbreak were confirmed in St. Lucie County on Wednesday before landfall.

The number of power outages in Central Florida exceeds 3 million, with in some cases entire counties reporting no electricity.

Emergency officials in Tampa say about 95% of people heeded the warnings and evacuated.

Severe damage has been caused in areas such as St. Petersburg.

While local and national rescue teams assess the damage in the west and remain alert in the east.

Storm trackers say they have seen hardly any cars or people in the areas hardest hit.
