How Mariah Carey Found Peace With Her Late Mother Patricia

Mariah Carey and her late mother Patricia Carey didn’t always have the easiest relationship, but the singer found peace by creating a new perspective on it.

In her 2020 memoir The Meaning of Mariah Careythe 55-year-old pop/R&B singer wrote about how their bond caused her “so much pain and confusion.”

By working through her family trauma in therapy, Mariah was able to find peace and redefine her feelings.

“For my sanity and peace of mind, my therapist encouraged me to literally rename and restructure my family,” the “We Belong Together” artist wrote. “My mom became Pat to me, Morgan my ex-brother, and Alison my ex-sister… I had to stop expecting them to one day miraculously become the mom, big brother, and big sister I fantasized about.”

While Mariah focused on her musical talent, which distracted her from her difficult home situation, her mother—a Juilliard College-trained opera singer and vocal coach—seemed jealous.

“When people you love are jealous of you professionally, that’s part of success, but when that person is your mother and the jealousy comes at such a young age, it hurts extra bad,” she wrote.

In her memoir, Mariah also recalls singing in the car with her mother as a teenager and Patricia allegedly telling her, “You just have to hope that one day you’ll be half the singer I am.”

“To this day, what she said still haunts and hurts me,” the “Emotions” artist recalls.

Despite their differences, Mariah “reserves a place in my heart” for Patricia, even dedicating her memoir to her children, her ancestors, and her mother.

“And to Pat, my mother, who, despite everything, I believe, did the best she could,” the “Heartbreaker” musician wrote. “I will always love you the best I can.”
