How Agatha Has Been Connected To Wandavision And Doctor Strange All This Time

IIt’s been more than three years since WandaVision debuted as the first Marvel Cinematic Universe show on Disney+. And while you probably haven’t forgotten the song “Agatha All Along” that went viral during the pandemic, you might not remember the specifics of who Agatha is, what her powers were, and how witchcraft worked on that show.

Agatha Always Alreadythe creepy spin-off series of WandaVision creator Jac Schaeffer, revolves around antagonist Agatha, a dark witch who wielded a book called the Darkhold and attempted to steal the powers of Avenger Wanda Maximoff. At the end of WandaVisionWanda cast a spell on Agatha, causing her to fall into a delusion.

In the intervening years, Wanda has taken a rather villainous turn, embarking on her own doomed adventures to be reunited with her family in the film Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of MadnessAgatha presumably worked hard for years in the town of Westview, where Wanda left her.

In the new Disney+ series premiering September 18, Agatha (Kathryn Hahn) breaks free of Wanda’s (Elizabeth Olsen) spell and gathers her own coven on a quest to get her powers back. Aubrey Plaza, Joe Locke, Sasheer Zamata, Ali Ahn, and none other than Patti LuPone play the witches who join forces with Agatha to embark on something called the Witch’s Road.

Here’s everything you need to remember from WandaVision for watching Agatha Always Already.

In WandaVisionAvenger Wanda Maximoff visits Westview, New Jersey, where her deceased lover, Vision, had planned to build a home for the couple and settle down. Fueled by a wave of immense grief, Wanda places a curse on the entire town, controlling every resident. This allows her to resurrect Vision and give birth to their (imaginary) twin sons. The foursome live out their pristine suburban lives in a sitcom-inspired reality. (Each episode is a riff on a different famous family sitcom.)

Towards the end of the show, Wanda discovers that her nosy neighbor Agatha is herself a witch who had wormed her way into Wanda’s imagination in an attempt to steal Wanda’s power. Agatha reveals that Wanda was in fact the Scarlet Witch, a legendary magician mentioned in the Darkhold, a book of spells.

Agatha, who can steal the powers of other witches if she is shot with them, attempts to hold Wanda’s sons hostage. Wanda defeats Agatha and punishes the dark witch by trapping her in her own mind.

When Vision begs Wanda to free the townspeople of Westview, she agrees, killing her (imaginary) husband and (imaginary) children. She leaves town, but takes the Darkhold with her to study magic.

Agatha meanwhile remains in Westview, where she plays out various television plots. We find her there at the beginning of Agatha Always Already.

The Darkhold is a book about black magic

The Darkhold is basically a very powerful book of black magic. Agatha owns it in WandaVisionand Wanda takes it from her. The book of evil spells then becomes the MacGuffin in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.

In Multiverse of madnessWanda, desperate to be reunited with her sons, attempts to capture a superhero named America Chavez. She believes she can use America’s multiverse-hopping powers to summon her sons from a parallel timeline.

America Chavez is under the protection of Doctor Strange. When the sorcerer refuses to give up the young girl, Wanda uses the Darkhold to “dream” or inhabit another version of herself in a parallel universe, and pursue Doctor Strange and America throughout the multiverse.

But during the film, a sorceress sacrifices herself to destroy the Darkhold and prevent Wanda from dreaming. Wanda travels to a mountain that is the source of the Darkhold’s power to restore her abilities.

To stop Wanda, Doctor Strange obtains the Book of Vishanti, the antithesis of the Darkhold, but Wanda destroys the book. Doctor Strange then obtains a Darkhold from a parallel universe to dream itself and fight Wanda.

Wanda eventually realizes her mistake when her parallel universe sons fear her instead of embracing her. Wanda realizes that she has turned into a monster and collapses a mountain on herself, destroying all the Darkholds in all the universes. Wanda’s death undoubtedly has consequences for the curse she placed on Agatha and serves as the inciting incident of the series.

The Salem Seven are supervillains from the Marvel comics

AGATHA ALWAYS

Seven hooded figures play an important role in the Agatha Always Already trailer, and fans have speculated that these mysterious characters are the Salem Seven. These villains could be the main antagonists in the series, though it’s unclear how closely the show will stick to the source material.

In the comics, Agatha has a satanic son named Nicholas Scratch. He in turn has seven children, the Salem Seven. The Salem Seven fight against Agatha and the Fantastic Four.

But the Salem Seven may get a different origin story in Agatha Always AlreadyIn . WandaVision we saw that Agatha was put on trial in Salem by other witches for practicing dark witchcraft above her station. Agatha managed to kill all the witches who planned to punish her, including her mother. Since the trial took place in Salem, it makes sense that the Salem Seven in the show could be related in some way to these witches that Agatha betrayed and killed.
