Here’s What Critics Are Saying About Disney+’s Latest Marvel TV Series

The embargo on revision of Agatha Always Already just in time for last night’s two-episode premiere. While only four of the nine episodes have been released to critics, we now have a pretty good idea of what they think of Marvel Studios’ latest Disney+ TV series.

So far, the consensus seems largely positive, with lead actress Kathryn Hahn receiving the lion’s share of the praise. Some critics feel the story isn’t strong enough to warrant another MCU TV series, though the majority seems to agree that this is a worthy follow-up to WandaVision.

Let’s start with the trades. The Hollywood Reporter review states that Agatha Always Already “doesn’t feel like a series that needs to exist for its own sake,” adding: “While the series has potential, the character-driven ensemble drama it could be feels hampered by both the need to pace the plot and the realization that Agatha needs to be the main character.”

Variety counters this by saying that the series “is never less than thoroughly enjoyable. There’s a sense of fun, not to mention consistent episodic structure, in the coven’s journey along the Road, punctuated by Agatha’s tantrums and meticulously designed waystations.”

Empire Online Prices Agatha Always Already 4/5 and concludes, “A charming mix of easy humor, strong performances and enchanting nostalgia that’s perfect for pre-Halloween viewing. Kathryn Hahn’s sheer magnetism alone will have you spellbound.” Comments on Total Film’s 5/5 rating: “This quirky, female-led ensemble show has it all—humor, jump scares, and authentic character development—making it a worthy successor to Disney Plus’ acclaimed WandaVision.”

The first two episodes received an 8/10 from IGN. “The premiere of Marvel’s Agatha All Along superbly captures the magic of WandaVision with a dark, mysterious and campy story that showcases the delicious evilness of Kathryn Hahn’s titular witch,” as the review shows.

USA Today was less impressed, going for 2/4, ending with, “One of the most versatile and transformative actors of her generation, (Kathryn Hahn) is just so good at playing bad (or really, playing anything a Hollywood script can throw at her). You have to wonder, since she’s the real draw of the show, why she’s hiding under excess characters and themed costumes.”

In contrast, The Guardian gives Agatha Always Already a perfect 5/5 and not only mentions the series “the perfect show for Halloween, but always a delight.” The BBC’s 4/5 review adds: “This is a cast that is completely – and often literally, thanks to the songs – in tune with each other and clearly happy to put on a magical show that is as crazy as it is dark.”

Superhero-hating website The Playlist gives it a C+, but acknowledges that what they’ve seen here suggests “Marvel has at least become an acceptable TV series for now.”

In our 4/5 ComicBookMovie.com review we said: “Agatha All Along is a creepy, beautiful, supernatural delight. It’s a worthy successor to WandaVision and a showcase for the enchanting Kathryn Hahn as your new MCU favorite, Agatha Harkness.”

The first two episodes of Agatha Always Already are now streaming on Disney+.
