CHEYENNE, Wyo. — The 128th annual Cheyenne Frontier Days Rodeo has been a hotly contested event for the past nine days, with athletes coming from near and far in search of a taste of glory at the Daddy of ’em All.

On the final day of the prestigious rodeo, which took place last Sunday at Frontier Park, Long Valley’s Denton Good won his first championship.

With his father, Allen, as his hazer, Good won the steer wrestling competition with a time of 6.5 seconds. Thanks to his top time, the 20-year-old Good earned a total of $12,710.

Good’s time was enough to beat Caden Camp of Belgrade, Montana (6.6 seconds) and Dakota Eldridge of Elko, Nevada (6.8 seconds).

Rodeo runs deep in the Good family, as Denton rode his brother’s horse, while the brother rode Denton’s horse in another rodeo. While Allen was Denton’s hazer, the father rode his grandfather’s hazing horse.

It wasn’t limited to family, as Good’s colleague was there to witness the winning performance. Denton’s foreman made the four-and-a-half-hour drive to watch the final lap while the rest of his crew worked on a fencing job.

After graduating from Kadoka, Good started a fencing company.

Hermosa’s Jess Tierney also earned some money in Cheyenne, placing seventh in the steer roping event with a time of 17.9 seconds. Tierney, who is currently ranked No. 6 in the world, earned $2,743.

Also of note, Shelby Boisjoli-Meged of Miles City, Mont., won the breakaway roping competition with a time of 3.7 seconds. Boisjoli-Meged also competed in the Days of 76 Rodeo in Deadwood, where she was defeated by Rickie Fanning of Spearfish.

Fanning won in Deadwood with a time of exactly two seconds, while Boisjoli-Meged posted a time of 2.1 seconds.

More than 1,500 rodeo competitors descended on Frontier Park to compete in the $1.2 million dollar rodeo. The rodeo’s qualifying rounds ran from July 13 to July 17. The quarterfinals began on July 19, with competitors competing for a spot in the semifinals, which ran from last Friday to last Saturday. Championship Sunday featured the top competitors in nine events.

During the nine rodeo performances, 115,494 fans were in attendance, compared to 116,960 who ventured through the turnstiles last year.
