Former Buckeyes Start ‘Em, Sit ‘Em Fantasy Football Week 2

Week one was a crazy week for fantasy football. Overall, the week didn’t provide many concrete answers for this season, but rather left some confusion on who would start and who would sit on the bench in week two.

For many former Ohio State Buckeyes, the first week wasn’t the best show. Here are the players who still have to play this week and the players who will have to sit out.

Start: CJ Stroud – Houston Texans

Stroud is coming off a 24-for-32, 234-yard, two-touchdown performance in a win against the Indianapolis Colts. While this wasn’t a monster game for Stroud, I expect his connection with Nico Collins, Stefon Diggs, and Tank Dell to look even better against the Chicago Bears. This primetime game should go the Texans’ way, and Stroud should be almost a permanent lock as a fantasy starter.

Sits: Justin Fields – Pittsburgh Steelers

Fields is expected to start for the second straight week against the Denver Broncos. He ultimately did enough to help his team beat the Atlanta Falcons in the opener, but failed to score a touchdown. Fields will always provide some value as a running back, but he won’t provide enough to warrant a start in any format.

Start: JK Dobbins – Los Angeles Chargers

Dobbins shined in his first game back from injury and his first game with the Chargers. He’s an intriguing fantasy prospect after an impressive 13.5 yards per carry. While Dobbins averaged 135 yards and one touchdown on 10 carries against the Las Vegas Raiders, he could even surpass those numbers against the Carolina Panthers. Carolina lost 47-10 to the New Orleans Saints last week and also gave up 180 rushing yards. Dobbins should at least reach double figures this week.

Sits: Ezekiel Elliott – Dallas Cowboys

Elliott may be back with the Cowboys, but that doesn’t mean he’s back to top form. He had a strong performance against the Cleveland Browns thanks to his one rushing touchdown. That touchdown did, however, earn him points. On 10 carries, Elliott had 40 rushing yards, which was far less efficient than Dobbins by comparison. Even if Elliott gets the most carries of any Dallas running back against the Saints, New Orleans has a solid front seven to slow him down. Look for other options this week.

Start: Garrett Wilson – New York Jets

Wilson was on the field for 96 percent of the Jets offensive snaps against the San Francisco 49ers on Monday. In addition to a high snap count, Wilson was targeted 11 times by quarterback Aaron Rodgers. Expect Wilson to get a lot more targets against the Tennessee Titans and perhaps improve on his six receptions for 60 yards. A touchdown should also come his way soon.

Start: Chris Olave – New Orleans Saints

Rashid Shaheed was the Saints receiver who had a big game in their blowout win over the Panthers. Despite Shaheed’s early season success, Olave is still the team’s No. 1 wide receiver. Despite only being targeted twice, Olave was on the field for nearly 80 percent of the offensive snaps. In a game where the Saints are expected to play a close game or even trail against the Dallas Cowboys, expect the Saints to throw more. Keeping Olave quiet for two weeks in a row is a tough task.

Start: Marvin Harrison Jr. -Arizona Cardinals

Marvin Harrison Jr. had a rough rookie debut against the Buffalo Bills. He played slowly, dropped an easy grab and managed just one reception for four yards. Even though Harrison didn’t play well and Kyler Murray missed him on a wide-open pass downfield, don’t panic just yet. The star rookie was on the field for 90 percent of the offensive reps and should quickly be on the same page as Murray. The Los Angeles Rams’ secondary was burned by Jameson Williams to start the year. Harrison, like Williams, has elite speed but is much more capable as a route runner. This could be a big bounce-back week for Harrison Jr.

Sits: Jaxon Smith-Njigba – Seattle Seahawks

Smith-Njigba could absolutely have a breakout year in 2024. In fact, I believe he will. That said, this isn’t the ideal week to let him play. The New England Patriots defense was stifling against the Cincinnati Bengals in Week 1. Not only did Ja’Marr Chase have a mediocre game by his standards, but the supporting cast around him did next to nothing. If you have to let JSN play, he’ll likely be nothing more than a WR3/flex this week.

Sits: Terry McLaurin – Washington Commanders

The scary Terry was targeted just four times against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, two of which he hauled in for 17 yards. While McLaurin has played over 80 percent of the offensive snaps, the chemistry between him and rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels doesn’t seem to be quite there yet. With a lack of talent in the team’s wide receiver room, opponents could honestly double-team McLaurin to take him out of the game. Maybe McLaurin takes a step in the right direction against the New York Giants, but I’d recommend waiting another week to see what happens here.

There are no starting tight ends at the moment, but keep an eye on Jeremy Ruckert of the New York Jets and Cade Stover of the Houston Texans. Ruckert has been firmly in the Jets’ second tight end position, playing 33 percent of their snaps. Stover played just 19 percent of Houston’s offensive snaps in his rookie debut. As time goes on, though, both players could get a chance to make a bigger impact. That will likely depend on the injuries they deal with this season.
