The fire at Jones Barrel Co., 2424 N. 11th St., was reported at 9 a.m., an Omaha Fire Department spokesman said. The fire was declared under control around 9:40 a.m.

Battalion Chief Coby Werner said the fire was reported as a brush fire. First responders on the scene estimated more than 100 barrels were on fire and a second alarm was issued due to the possibility of hazardous materials.

“We’ve been working with the owners of Jones Barrel and they’ve let us know that what they have on the site here is primarily food products, very little hazardous material, but as a precaution we initially wanted to evacuate (to the) north,” Werner said. “Crews are now investigating to determine the cause of the fire.”

Werner said it was too early to say whether the fire was deliberately set. Investigators were working with the business owner and any witnesses to determine the cause

“It actually looked a lot worse than the fire actually was,” Werner said.
