NEW YORK — Coco Gauff’s reign as US Open champion is over.

The 20-year-old, who broke through last summer to win her first Grand Slam title, couldn’t repeat the magic this time around, losing in the fourth round on Sunday to compatriot and No. 13 seed Emma Navarro, who won 6-3, 4-6, 6-3.

It is the second straight Grand Slam in which Navarro, a former NCAA champion at Virginia, knocked out Gauff in the round of 16.

For a while, this match looked very similar to their meeting at Wimbledon, which Navarro won in relatively easy fashion: 6-4, 6-3.

This time, there was a twist. With a break down in the second set and a quick defeat looming, Gauff persevered, winning the last three games to take the set and send the Arthur Ashe Stadium crowd into a frenzy.

But Gauff couldn’t maintain the momentum and her serve was broken at 1-1 after two double faults.

Gauff’s serve was a problem throughout the match, finishing with 19 double faults and only hitting 47% of her first serves.

Sunday’s loss caps a disappointing summer for Gauff, which saw her lose early at the Olympics and the two major hard-court tournaments in Canada and Cincinnati in the run-up to the US Open.

The lack of confidence in her game was on display against Navarro, whose defensive prowess and baseline consistency made it difficult for Gauff to score points. She finished with just 14 winners and 60 unforced errors.

Navarro will face 26th-seeded and former world number 2 Paula Badosa of Spain in the quarterfinals.
