Dozens of hot air balloons take off to start the race

RENO, Nevada (WKRC) – Watch as dozens of hot air balloons take to the skies to mark the start of a four-day event of flying fun.

Friday was the first day of the Great Reno Balloon Race in Nevada. More than 150,000 people are expected to visit Reno to watch the colorful balloons float through the sky.

The event will take place from September 5 to 8 and an estimated 100 balloonists are invited to take part in the festivities.

While the race itself is a big draw for participants, the Great Reno Balloon Race is more of a celebration of hot air balloons than a competition.

Guests who can’t yet fly will have the chance to ride in one of the many hot air balloons. Several light-up balloons and night kites will also take to the skies before the “Mass Ascension Launch” each day at 7:00 a.m.
