Doubles teams wear microphones as part of ATP trial in Washington

Select doubles teams will wear microphones for the first time during competitive matches at the Mubadala Citi DC Open in Washington, as part of a trial to improve the fan experience, the ATP said on Monday.

While players typically wear microphones during demonstration matches, the tryout session gives fans insight into tactical discussions during tournaments, similar to NBA players huddled in a huddle and Formula 1 drivers talking to technicians.

The talks will also be available on the ATP’s digital channels during the event from July 29 to August 4.

“The continuation of the 2024 ATP Doubles Trial with the introduction of player-worn microphones during the competition is a transformative opportunity for players, fans and the sport as a whole,” said ATP Chief Sporting Officer Ross Hutchins. “This will give fans live, never-before-seen insight into the tactics players employ during crucial points of a match, while also providing exciting glimpses into the more light-hearted, humorous moments of the action.”

Other changes being tried in Washington include a 21-second limit between points, 60-second substitutions and free movement of the crowd along the sides of the court.

The ATP has also tested innovations in doubles this season in Madrid, London, Hamburg, Gstaad, Newport and Kitzbühel.
