Dodgers’ Shohei Ohtani hits 46th home run, ties personal record

LOS ANGELES — Shohei Ohtani hit his 46th home run of the season, tying his career-high in games. The Los Angeles Dodgers defeated the Cleveland Guardians 4-0 on Sunday to tie the record.

The first pitch was 104 degrees Fahrenheit, the highest temperature in Dodger Stadium history. In the fifth inning, Ohtani hit a 450-foot solo shot down the right-field line off Tanner Bibee. The score was reviewed to see if it was fair.

“We were just curious why it took so long to watch the replay,” Dodgers teammate Max Muncy said. “Maybe the guys in New York admired it as much as we did.”

Ohtani has hit 22 career home runs of at least 450 feet, all since 2021. That’s five more than any other player in that span.

Ohtani also hit 46 home runs for the Los Angeles Angels in his unanimous American League MVP season in 2021. The Japanese star has 46 stolen bases in an effort to become the first major league player to have a 50-50 season.

“I try to be less conscious of it and more focused on having a good feel at bat and whenever possible during the game, whether that’s stealing bases or getting to the next base, that’s what I try to do,” Ohtani said through an interpreter.

He is also just one home run shy of tying Cody Bellinger’s 2019 home run total for the third-most in a season in Dodgers history.

Ohtani finished the day 2-for-4. He was thrown out at first base in the third inning.

Speaking of scorching temperatures, it was also 103 degrees for the first pitch of Game 1 of the 2017 World Series against Houston. On Sunday, the Dodgers gave all fans a voucher for a free bottle of water.

Jack Flaherty went 7⅓ innings, struck out six and allowed four hits. The Southern California native is 5-1 since arriving in a trade from Detroit. He said he also wasn’t feeling well last week.

“It was fun when you’re facing such different elements, whether it’s really cold or really hot,” Flaherty said. “It was just a different challenge. It was fun. You have to do a little bit of preparation. Keep everything moving and hydrated. I’m sure everyone was hotter than me.”

Muncy hit a home run in the eighth inning for the Dodgers, his twelfth of a season shortened by injuries.

In Dodgers injury news, pitcher Gavin Stone (right shoulder inflammation) will sit out for 10 days and then rebuild to see where he is, manager Dave Roberts said. His postseason status is in question with 19 games remaining.
