Derek Carr injury update: ESPN broadcast updates Saints QB status

Monday Night Football was a grind for the New Orleans Saints against the Kansas City Chiefs, trailing by 10 points late in the fourth quarter. They may have to go the rest of the way without their quarterback, like Derek Carr returns to the locker room after an injury.

“Carr is out of the tent and walking along the sideline without a helmet,” Ross Jackson said via X. “Looks like he’s on his way to the locker room.”

ESPN’s Lisa Salters provided an update when the broadcast showed Carr going to the locker room and saying it was an oblique injury. His official designation is questionable, but if he can’t make it back in time, New Orleans will join in Jake Haener.

Carr has completed 18 of 28 passes for 165 yards, two touchdowns and an interception. Kansas City’s defense was able to apply pressure all night, never allowing Carr to get comfortable. While New Orleans has put together some incredible offensive displays early in the season, this wasn’t one of them.

For the most part, Monday’s game at Arrowhead Stadium is no longer in question with New Orleans trailing by two scores and not too much time left on the clock. Carr’s injury immediately raises questions about the future, as the Saints will likely fall to 2-3.

Unfortunately, playing on Monday night means they have a short week ahead of them. Even worse, the next division opponent is scheduled: the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Kickoff is scheduled for 12pm CT at home, making the week even shorter.

Carr and his health will be a big storyline going forward, wondering if he can play in a crucial NFC South matchup. If not, Haener could be the guy until the oblique returns to full health. Rookie Spencer Rattler out South Carolina is also on the list.
