EUGENE — The Oregon Ducks defeated the Idaho Vandals 24-14 in their first game of the 2024 college football season. It was the Oregon debut for quarterback Dillon Gabriel, who finished with 380 yards and two touchdowns.

The bad news is that Oregon allowed three sacks against Idaho, which is the most in a single game since Oklahoma allowed three in the 2021 Alamo Bowl (they allowed just five sacks over the past two seasons).

There was more good news: Oregon receiver Tez Johnson tied his personal best with 12 catches and two touchdowns for 81 yards. His 12 receptions tied for the third-most in UO history in a single game.

“Different than we thought it would look, but still, we have to give Idaho a lot of credit,” Lanning said after the game. “They played a really good game. They gave us nothing for nothing. A lot of teachable moments for us. I’m looking forward to watching the film and getting back to work because there’s definitely some stuff we can clean up. Great teams can learn from close games, and this was a close game. We didn’t create some of the explosive plays that I was hoping we could create offensively. We gave away some key plays on defense.”

Gabriel’s two passing touchdowns were both caught by Johnson, who led the Ducks in receptions with 12 and 81 yards. Johnson spoke of his teammate, Gabriel, after the game:

“We really clicked. I told (Gabriel) every ride that I believe in him. I could see on his face that he was hesitant, but we all believe in him. And next week we’ll be completely up to speed.”

Next, the Ducks host Boise State at Autzen Stadium on Saturday, September 7 at 7:00 p.m. PT. The game can be seen on Big Ten Network.
