Commemorative events on October 1 in the Las Vegas Valley

LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – It’s been seven years since the Oct. 1 shooting in Las Vegas, recognized as the largest mass shooting in modern American history.

That night, 58 people would die and more than 500 be injured during the Route 91 Harvest Festival, although the death toll would rise to 60 in the aftermath.

As the valley prepares to remember the victims of the violence, here is a list of events taking place around Clark County:

Remembrance ceremony at sunrise

A Sunrise Remembrance ceremony will be held at 7:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Clark County Government Center Amphitheater in downtown Las Vegas.

The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department, Clark County Fire Department and the Resiliency & Justice Center will co-host the event.

The event is open to the public and features live music, the Southern Nevada Multi-agency Honor Guard and remarks from Governor Joe Lombardo and LVMPD Sheriff Kevin McMahill.

A moment of silence will be observed during the event to honor those lost.

Blood drive

Vitalant and the Vegas Golden Knights are teaming up again for the annual Memorial Blood Drive on October 1.

Interested parties could donate blood at the City National Arena from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The aim of the action is to honor and commemorate the victims of the shooting of October 1, 2017.

“In addition to the shooting victims, this annual blood drive also honors our Las Vegas community members who contributed on October 1, 2017. The blood they gave replaced what was used to treat the victims. Only through our great community can we maintain a stable blood supply,” said Erik Hill, regional director at Vitalant.

Donors can schedule appointments here.

Toll of the bells

Beginning at 10:05 p.m., Mayor Carolyn G. Goodman and city communications director David Riggleman will read the names lost the night of the shooting.

The city of Las Vegas says the memorial ceremony will take place at the Las Vegas Community Healing Garden.

The event starts around 10:05 PM. Goodman and Riggleman will read the 58 victims who were lost the night of the shooting.

A bell will be rung and a candle will be lit in memory of each person lost.

FOX5 plans to attend these events and provide a livestream. Revisit this story for updates.
