CNN data reporter warns Kamala Harris on course for ‘worst’ Democratic performance among union voters

CNN data reporter Harry Enten warned Monday that Vice President Kamala Harris was on track for the “worst” Democratic performance among union voters in a generation.

“Sometimes there are data points that just jump off the screen and should set off sirens. OK, these are union households. This is the Democratic margin in the presidential election. It’s not what it used to be,” Enten began. “Bill Clinton won that union vote by 30 points. Hillary Clinton only won by 12 points in 2016. That was the lowest mark for a Democrat since 1984, Mondale vs. Reagan. But look where Kamala Harris is now. only nine points ahead.”

President Biden was at +19 among union household voters in November 2020, according to Enten.

“That would be the worst Democratic performance in a generation. Ten points off the score of Joe Biden, who of course won four years ago, was kind of a union guy, union Joe, right?” he said of Harris’ numbers.

Enten also spoke about voters who went to trade school or vocational school.

“Look at this margin, this to me, oh boy, does this tell you about the state of our politics now versus the early 1990s, the margin among vocational and trade school graduates in the pre-election polls. Bill Clinton led that vote by seven points over George HW Bush, look where Donald Trump is today, over Kamala Harris, a lead of 31 points,” Enten said.

The Teamsters union recently announced that it would not support a presidential candidate. The union has supported Democratic candidates in almost every election since 1988, when they backed George HW Bush. The union also chose not to support a candidate in the 1996 elections.

“When I think people think of the working class, they think of people who use their hands. And we know that Donald Trump is after that vote, and he’s in a very, very strong position, perhaps more than anyone else. The bloc that goes to trade school or vocational school has gone from being a Democratic core group to a core group of Donald Trump’s enormous support among the working class,” Enten said.

The data reporter also noted that Trump had won among non-college voters of color, despite Harris still leading among the group overall.

“So this is the margin among non-college graduates, OK, the voters of color. Look, four years ago, look, Joe Biden won that group by 45 points. “Look where Kamala Harris’ support is today, she still leads that group, but that lead has dropped 17 points to just 28 points,” he said.

“The reason Donald Trump is doing so well among voters of color is because he’s really gone in and attracted a lot of voters that he didn’t have before among those who haven’t graduated. And this is part of a bigger picture. trend that we’re seeing throughout our political era, where Republicans, and Donald Trump in particular, are doing very, very well among working-class voters, whether they belong to a union, whether they have job training or whether they voters are of color,” Enten added.
