Classes resume as normal after police investigate ‘high profile threat’ at Durango High School

Classes will resume as normal on Friday after authorities investigated a “rumor of a threat” at Durango High School in Las Vegas.

Students and staff on campus were taken to the football field as a precaution Friday morning while Clark County School District Police investigated, Durango Assistant Principal MJ Park told families in an email.

“School is open and classes will resume as normal today,” Park wrote.

The email did not go into details of the investigation.

Students and their families are encouraged to report any potential threats to the anonymous SafeVoice reporting system, a school administrator, or law enforcement official.

“Also talk to your children about the serious consequences of making threats against the school,” Park said.

This comes after a shooting on campus from Apalachee High School near Winder, Georgia, on Wednesday. Two students and two teachers were killed and nine others were injured.

The full message was shared with Durango High School families Friday morning:

Dear Durango High School Families:

This is Assistant Principal MJ Park. Our highest priority is to keep your child safe and to keep you informed of important issues that are happening within our school community.

This morning you may have noticed police at our school. CCSD police were investigating a high profile threat against our school. Out of an abundance of caution, students and staff who were on campus at the time were moved to the football field while police investigated.

School is open and classes will resume as normal today.

Encourage your child to report any perceived threats to SafeVoice, a school administrator, or the police. Also, talk to your children about the serious consequences of making threats to the school.

If you have any questions or concerns about your child, please feel free to contact the school’s main office at 702-799-5850.
