Chiefs defeat Ravens as hunt for third straight Super Bowl begins with right foot

A broken toe from Baltimore Ravens tight end Isaiah Likely cost the Kansas City Chiefs their first win of the year in overtime in the first game of the NFL season.

In the final moments of the game, Lamar Jackson and the Ravens needed a touchdown to force overtime. He fired the ball to Likely, who reeled it in and tried to get the ball two yards into the goal.

On closer inspection, however, Likely’s toe hit the back line and he was not allowed to play anymore. With that, the match ended dramatically in favor of the home team: 27-20.

The Chiefs are gunning for NFL history this season as the first team to win three consecutive Super Bowls. On the night they unveiled their newest banner, they did what had to be done—and ultimately saw some good fortune come their way—to get off to a good start.

Earlier this year, the Chiefs defeated the Ravens in the AFC Championship Game to advance to the Super Bowl in Las Vegas. This time, they continued that dominance at home in Kansas City.

And while Patrick Mahomes showed his skills on the football field as quarterback for the Chiefs, it was his new weapon, speed demon Xavier Worthy, who really shined in his NFL debut.

One reason the Chiefs are expected to have more explosive plays this season is Worthy, the new record holder in the 40-yard dash after running a 4.21-second run at the NFL Scouting Combine.

That speed was immediately evident in this game: he only touched the ball three times, but two of them resulted in touchdowns.

The Chiefs needed just four plays to get on the field for scoring opportunities on their first drive of the season. Mahomes connected with sophomore receiver Rashee Rice, who had two catches for 27 yards, his last a 16-yard catch-and-run with a horse collar tackle that added another 15 yards.

Then the ball first fell into the hands of rookie receiver Xavier Worthy, the new NFL Combine 40-yard dash record holder, and he did not disappoint. His blazing speed was on full display as he weaved past the Ravens defense and into the end zone for a 21-yard touchdown run—his first NFL touchdown.

The Ravens, however, were the first to score a touchdown of the new year. It was their newest addition, running back Derrick Henry, who drove the ball in from five yards out for his first trip to the end zone as a Raven.

However, after such a strong start, the Chiefs and Ravens decided to stall their next drives, but we did see our first turnover of the new year.

Chiefs star defensive tackle Chris Jones, who had been causing chaos all game, came into the backfield and forced the ball out of Jackson’s hands on the first play of the Ravens’ third drive. That set the Chiefs up for another potential touchdown drive, but Juju Smith-Schuster, who rejoined the Chiefs this offseason, was unable to handle a ball on the goal line.

Harrison Butker scored his first field goal of the year to lead Kansas City.

It was a lead that Kansas City would not relinquish for the rest of the game, as Baltimore simply couldn’t get going like they normally did en route to the league’s best record last season (though their final drive made things interesting). Justin Tucker, who struggled to get more than 50 yards last season, missed his first field goal of the year from 53 yards out.

And despite intercepting Mahomes late in the first half, the Ravens had to settle for a field goal and went into the locker room trailing by three points (13-10).

The Chiefs built a lead on their first drive of the second half, with Mahomes taking control on a six-play, 81-yard drive that ended with Pacheco scoring from one yard out.

But while the Ravens have struggled on offense, we all know that one play is all it takes to turn the tide. And that’s exactly what happened when Jackson threw the ball to Isaiah Likely, the Ravens tight end who excelled last year in place of the injured Mark Andrews.

He likely secured the pass with linebacker Nick Bolton all over him, and he began making the Chiefs miss. After getting around Bolton, he found a couple of blocks and began running downfield. He hit the brakes just short of the goal line and ran into the end zone for a 49-yard touchdown, making it a three-point game again.

Worthy’s second touchdown, however, came just after Baltimore felt momentum again on the sideline, as Marlon Humphrey thought he had help from the safety and Mahomes didn’t miss his rookie on the right sideline as he entered the end zone for a 35-yard score.

The Ravens cut the lead to seven points with another field goal by Tucker and managed to get the ball back with two minutes left in an attempt to tie, or perhaps even win, the game.

Baltimore worked its way downfield as Jackson began to dissect the defense by finding Likely, who set a personal best in the game with 111 on nine catches. Then things got intriguing when Rashod Bateman grabbed a 38-yard reception and found himself at the Kansas City 10-yard line.

With second-and-goal and 10 seconds left, Jackson danced around the pocket and fired a pass to a wide-open Zay Flowers, but he threw behind him. Then the likely accident happened, ending the Ravens’ night in heartbreaking mourning.
