Black Twitter mourns the loss of American father John Amos

In the past month, we have lost quite a few black legends. Now. we are reeling from the passing of an actor who was an essential part of our most culturally important stories. On Tuesday, KC Amos confirmed the death of his actor father John Amosat the age of 84. According to Peoplethe “Good Times” star died of natural causes on August 21.

“Many fans consider him their TV dad,” KC wrote in a statement. “He lived a good life. His legacy will live on through his outstanding works on television and film as an actor.”

In addition to “Good Times,” Amos was beloved for his roles in “Roots;” “Die Hard 2;” “Coming to America;” and “The West Wing.”

“My father loved working as an actor all his life,” KC continued. “Most recently in ‘Suits LA’ playing himself and in our documentary about his journey as an actor, ‘America’s Dad.’ He was my father, my best friend and my hero. Thank you for your prayers and support during this time.”

On social media, fans celebrated his legacy, with many of them using the famous moment when Esther Rolle’s Florida Evans broke down and screamed “Damn, damn, damn” after James’ death to convey their emotions.

One person even used James’ signature to remember the star: post“DAMN DAMN IT! RIP to a great actor and one of the best TV and movie dads ever, John Amos.

Someone else remembered his most famous roles, write on X“John James Kunta Kinte-Evans-Mcdowell-Amos?! LAW NO!”

Another person recalled the impact he made on them with his work, post“What a loss for the world. Great actor. He also did a great job starring in Roots – when I watched it as a kid, I was completely drawn in by his performance. RIP, Johannes Amos.”
