Baker Mayfield injury: Side update on Buccaneers QB after he limped off the field

Baker Mayfield and the Tampa Bay offense are having a nice day on Thursday Night Football, scoring 27 points through three quarters. Another field goal was added, but there was a downside. Mayfield was tackled awkwardly on a bag and twisted.

While the quarterback immediately stood up, he limped to the sideline. No exact injury has been identified, but the replay shows something in the leg area for Mayfield. Possibly on the right side while trying to avoid a bag.

“Baker Mayfield slowly left the field after that last drive,” Amazon reporter Kaylee Hartung said shortly after the incident. “You saw him hobble on his right knee. Since then he has been back on the bench, with his head in the iPad, next to Liam Coen, his offensive coordinator.

“He just stood up for the first time. He has more or less rejected all medical help and has now taken a few steps up and down. It doesn’t look as serious as it looked when he was first hit.”

Hartung’s update came as Atlanta was driving down the field. Kirk cousins connected with Darnell Mooney on fourth down for a touchdown before kicking the ball back to Tampa Bay. There was no doubt who would be there at quarterback while Mayfield would retake the field.

Mayfield has completed 17 of his 21 passes for 179 yards and three touchdowns. The Buccaneers are humming on offense and have scored just once on the night so far. A huge performance in a huge NFC South matchup against the Falcons.

Hopefully there will be no more limping from Mayfield and he can finish the game. If not, Kyle Trask is listed as Tampa Bay’s current backup. Given the way the two offenses scored, he will be needed going forward.
