‘Baby Reindeer’ Wins Best Limited or Anthology Series at 2024 Emmys

Baby reindeer showed its overwhelming impact with a win in the outstanding limited or anthology series category at the 2024 Emmys

After taking the stage, creator and star Richard Gadd thanked the show’s cast and crew, saying, “I know the industry is in a recession right now and I know I can force or pressure networks and the like to turn off the money tap and broaden the programming, but I believe that no recession can ever be broken without a willingness to take risks.”

He continued: “I think if Baby reindeer has proven that there is no set formula, you don’t need big stars, proven IP, a long-running series, all-encompassing stories to have a hit. The one constant in any success on television is good storytelling, good storytelling that speaks to our times. So, take risks, push boundaries, explore the uncomfortable, dare to fail to achieve.”

Netflix- Baby reindeerwhich tells Gadd’s semi-autobiographical story about an aspiring comedian and his stalker, sparked discussion among viewers after its premiere in April and was nominated for a total of 11 Emmys.

In Baby reindeerGadd, 35, plays a version of herself — a bartender who ends up with a stalker named Martha (Jessica Gunning) — after he offers her a cup of tea while he’s working in a London pub. The real Martha, Fiona Harvey, sued Netflix for $140 million in June, alleging the streaming service and Gadd made it easy for viewers to identify her and ruin her livelihood. Harvey, 48, called Martha’s portrayal defamatory and inaccurate. Still, the seven-episode series drew enough viewers to make it Netflix’s 10th most-watched English-language series in June.

“I don’t think anyone expected it to be the stratospheric, Emmy-nominated success that it was. And it was overnight,” Gadd said. The Hollywood Reporter.

This year’s category was packed with talent, as other nominees included: Fargo, Chemistry Lessons, Ripley And Real Detective: Nightland.

Rice, based on Patricia Highsmith’s 1955 novel The talented Mr. Ripley, stars Andrew Scott as con man Tom Ripley. The story was previously told in the 1999 film The Talented Mr. Ripley starring Matt Damon and Jude Law, so Scott, 47, wanted to give the story a new twist.

“People have a lot of preconceived notions about Tom Ripley,” Scott told Netflix’s Tudum. “So my job, I guess, is to ignore all that and try to create our own version of it.”

That’s exactly what Scott did: the Irish actor’s performance earned him an Emmy nomination in the category of Best Actor in a Short Series or Movie.

Season 5 of Fargo starring Juno Temple, Jon Hamm, Joe Keery and Lamorne Morris, it was the first installment unrelated to previous seasons or the 1996 film that inspired the series.

Morris’ character, Deputy Witt Farr, met a shocking end in the season finale after trying to save Dot (Temple) from her ex-husband (Hamm). Morris, 41, told Entertainment weekly that he hoped viewers would “cry a lot” in the final episode.

“The craziest things can happen to the best people in the smallest of towns,” Morris said of the show, which is set in a small town in North Dakota. “That’s how these stories are made: They happen somewhere. And a lot of times, it happens to good people.”

Chemistry lessonsBased on the best-selling novel of the same name by Bonnie Garmus, takes viewers back to the 1950s, when chemist Elizabeth Zott (Brie Larson) accepts a job on a cooking show after society’s patriarchal ideals prevent her from succeeding in the scientific field. Elizabeth uses the opportunity to infuse her classroom with science.

Garmus, 67, told PEOPLE she feels “so lucky” and “grateful” that her book inspired a successful Apple TV+ show. “I almost feel like the book is one thing and the show is another, and I’m not going to compare them,” she said. “And you know what? The author is super biased.”

The latest episode of HBO’s Real Detective Jodie Foster and Kali Reis star to solve the mystery of eight men who disappeared at an Alaskan research station. “I’ve been really sincere about this transition,” said Foster, 61, who earned an acting nod for Nightlandtold EW of the pivot. “As a kid, I just didn’t think I could be a director because I never saw another female face. And now, the last five films I’ve done have all been women. It’s a big change for me and it’s really exciting to have that leadership style, and especially in response to the next installment of Real detective.

Real Detective has been picked up for a fifth season, with Lopez once again leading the show.
