Aston Villa host Bayern, Man City play PSG, Liverpool play Real Madrid in new Champions League stage format

During the draw for the UEFA Champions League, Manchester City – Paris Saint-Germain, Arsenal – Internazionale and Liverpool – Real Madrid were among the teams drawn.

The new format will see the elimination of groups in favour of a single table, with each team playing eight different teams, with four games played away and four at home.

Match highlights will be broadcast live throughout the season on TNT Sports and discovery+.

The top eight teams will qualify for the knockout round, which will be played in the same format as last year, with the remaining 16 teams competing in play-offs to reach that round. The format will be used from 2024 to 2027.

First, the teams from pot 1 were drawn, with teams from each of the four pots participating.

The draw, in which Gianluigi Buffon and Cristiano Ronaldo sent the teams, produced a number of exciting and relevant draws after years of rivalry and competition.

Manchester City face a number of tough tests, with the most notable being their former Champions League final opponents, Internazionale.

Inter Milan were drawn second from the pot and will play a home game against another Premier League club in Arsenal, as well as welcoming RB Leipzig. They will also face current Bundesliga champions Bayer Leverkusen.

Bayern Munich were given a home game against PSG, but also had to travel to Barcelona and play away against Aston Villa in the league.

Borussia Dortmund Another German team will play Barcelona and will face the Catalans’ arch-rivals Real Madrid at the Bernabeu, as well as Celtic at home.

Dortmund match schedule: Barcelona (home), Real Madrid (away), Shakhtar (home), Brugge (away), Celtic (home), Dinamo Zagreb (away), Sturm Graz (home), Bologna (away).

Barcelona There is also a short trip to Benfica in neighbouring Portugal on the programme, where the club will play a tough home game against Atalanta, the champions of the UEFA Europa League.

For fellow La Liga team Real MadridArne Slot faces a tough journey to Anfield in his first Champions League campaign with Liverpool, as well as a home game against AC Milan.

Liverpool welcomes back Xabi Alonso, who was a star for them as a player before leaving for Real Madrid, and was also linked as a potential replacement for Jurgen Klopp after a historic league triumph with Leverkusen last season. The Reds have a test group of matches, with meetings against Milan, Lille, Bologna, PSV and Girona, as well as Leverkusen.

Arsenalwere given a relatively favourable draw in the meantime, with PSG and Inter as the toughest opponents on paper.

PSG have a tough run of games ahead of them, with Atletico Madrid, Bayern and Arsenal all looking to perform strongly.

Besides facing Bayern Munich, Aston Villa celebrates the return to the Champions League with matches against Celtic, RB Leipzig, Juventus and others.
