Apple Just Canceled the iPhone 15 Pro, But the Choice Is Bigger Than Before

Every year, Apple discontinues a number of iPhone models as new ones are added. But right now, the lineup is broader than it was a month ago. The first two models that were available a few weeks ago and are now gone are the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max.

These are the only two iPhones that support Apple Intelligence, aside from the new iPhone 16 series. You can still pick one up from other retailers (though you might have to act quickly or grab a refurbished model from Amazon, for example), but it’s gone from Apple.

The third iPhone to be retired is the iPhone 13, which is why the number of available iPhones has grown so much.

The iPhone 13 came in two sizes, iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 mini. Both went on sale in September 2021 and remained in the mix until September 2022 when the iPhone 14 series launched. A year later, in September 2023, the iPhone 13 was still on sale, but the iPhone 13 mini disappeared, perhaps because the mini series was not as successful as originally envisioned.

That meant the total lineup as of September last year consisted of the iPhone 15, 15 Plus, 15 Pro, 15 Pro Max, iPhone 14, 14 Plus and iPhone 13, along with the eternal iPhone SE. That’s eight phones in total.

This time around, the iPhone 14 may be the oldest phone in the series, but its equally old sibling, the iPhone 14 Plus, has remained intact.

In other words, Apple now sells you nine different iPhones. As always, iPhones from previous years are now more competitively priced. The iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus cost $799 and $899 respectively until a few weeks ago. They’ve each dropped in price by $100, to $699 and $799. The prices of last year’s phones have now been reduced by a similar amount, so the iPhone 14 and 14 Plus now cost $599 and $699 respectively. The iPhone SE remains the same price as when it launched in 2022: $429.

Apple walks a fine line between offering as much choice as possible and not offering a bewildering selection. And this year there is one more choice than last year.
