Will there be mail delivered on Labor Day? Is the post office open on Monday, September 2, 2024?

It’s Labor Day and for many people that means a day off and a celebration of the unofficial end of summer.

While the day is meant to celebrate the role of organized labor in the U.S., many businesses and government services will be closed on Labor Day (Monday, September 2, 2024). One of the businesses that will not be open for business is the U.S. Postal Service.

Post offices will be closed on Monday and no mail will be delivered. Offices will reopen and service will resume on Tuesday, September 3.

Labor Day is the seventh postal holiday of the year, following New Year’s Day, Martin Luther King Jr. Birthday, Presidents Day, Memorial Day, Juneteenth, National Independence Day, and Independence Day. After Labor Day, there are four holidays on which the USPS is closed and postal service is suspended:

  • Columbus Day on Monday October 14
  • Veterans Day on Monday, November 11
  • Thanksgiving Day on Thursday, November 28
  • Christmas Day on Wednesday, December 25

While the USPS is closed for Labor Day, it is already thinking about winter. Last week, it announced two ceremonies for holiday-themed stamps. On September 14, the USPS will dedicate the Christmas Madonna and Child and Holiday Joy Stamps at the Smithsonian National Postal Museum in Washington, DC. On September 19, dedication ceremonies will be held for the Hanukkah Forever Stamp at the Lillian and Albert Small Capital Jewish Museum in Washington, DC.
