Two rookies inactive, won’t play in Eagles opener against Packers

Vic Fangio expressed doubts earlier this week when asked about defenseman Cooper DeJean and how prepared he would be for Friday night’s season opener.

“I think he is as prepared as he can be, but having said that, he is not where he needs to be yet,” Fangio said.

That led to speculation that DeJean could be one of the inactive players on game day. That was not the case. The rookie from Iowa is active for the game against the Green Bay Packers at Corinthians Arena in Sau Paolo, Brazil.

“It’s just really trying to fit in wherever,” DeJean said earlier this week. “I’m practicing multiple positions, wherever they have to put me. I want to be prepared to do that as best as I can.”

Fellow rookie Quinyon Mitchell is expected to play a big role in his rookie debut. DeJean didn’t have the luxury of being fully prepared after missing three weeks of training camp with a hamstring injury. Mental rehearsals only go so far.

“When you have talented receivers playing every week, you don’t know where they’re going to go,” he said of the difference between actually being on the field and just watching. “They know where they’re going. So you’ve got to try to pick up on tendencies. But then there’s those tendency breakers. So you just have to be on your toes. You never know when the ball’s going to come your way.”

The Eagles gameday inactives are rookies Jalyx Hunt and Trevor Keegan, Darian Kinnard, Isaiah Rodgers, Devin White and Byron Young. Tanner McKee is inactive but is listed as the third quarterback in case of injuries during the game to both Jalen Hurts and backup Kenny Pickett.

When Hunt was selected in the third round, he was seen as a developmental prospect. However, the defensive end showed enough talent during the summer and preseason games that a role in the team’s first game wouldn’t have been too much of a surprise.

Keegan and Kinnard both play offensive line and were replaced by Nick Gates, who was promoted from practice, presumably to serve as an emergency backup to center Cam Jurgens. Gates could also be deployed at guard, should he be needed there in an emergency.

Cornerback Rodgers (hand) and linebacker White (ankle) were inactive due to injuries.

Young, the defensive tackle, arrived a few days before the season opener after being released from the Las Vegas Raiders.
