The top-seeded player in the WNBA playoffs plays like a top-seeded player.

The New York Liberty completed their first-round sweep of the eighth-seeded Atlanta Dream with a 91-82 victory on Tuesday at the Barclays Center. It was no surprise, as the Liberty have their sights set on the WNBA title and have defeated the Dream in three of their four regular-season games.

They also won the first game convincingly with 83-69.

New York took things in stride, and the two-time reigning champion Las Vegas Aces did the same in the second game of Tuesday’s doubleheader, defeating the Seattle Storm 83-76 on their home court.

Las Vegas is attempting to become the first WNBA team to win three straight championships since the Houston Comets won the league’s first four titles from 1997 to 2000, a step they took by beating the Storm.

The Liberty were no doubt hoping for an easy win so they could focus on the next round, but the Dream missed the memo.

The visitors essentially jumped out to a two-point lead in the first half with Allisha Gray firing from long range. While New York fought back to take the lead in the second quarter, Atlanta didn’t let up, regaining a five-point lead at halftime before a back-and-forth second half.

Ultimately, however, the Liberty proved to have too much firepower.

Sabrina Ionescu was unstoppable en route to 36 points, nine assists and three steals on 12-of-23 shooting from the field and 5-of-11 shooting from long range. She drilled back-to-back three-pointers to take the lead midway through the fourth quarter, then assisted Leonie Fiebich for a crucial and-1 as the home team began to seize control.

Ionescu wasn’t alone, as Jonquel Jones (20 points, 13 rebounds, two steals and one block on 8 of 12 shooting from the field) recorded a double-double, while Breanna Stewart added 13 points and six rebounds.

Atlanta got 26 points thanks to 5-of-8 shooting from long range by Gray, and Rhyne Howard was a box-scorer (19 points, five rebounds, three assists, two steals and two blocks).

Yet in the end it wasn’t enough.

Ionescu controlled the pace even when she didn’t score or assist directly, and appropriately decided the game from the free-throw line, while the crowd rewarded her with MVP slogans.

A’ja Wilson and the two-time reigning champions advance to the next round.

The Aces defeated the Storm 83-76 on Tuesday night at Michelob Ultra Arena to advance to the semifinals, where they will face top-seeded Liberty.

In a fierce battle between some of the WNBA’s best players, the Aces closed out their first-round series against the Storm thanks to veterans Wilson and Kelsey Plum.

Wilson, the 2024 WNBA MVP, finished Tuesday’s game with 24 points, 13 rebounds, two assists and two blocks, while Plum scored a team-high 29 points to go along with six rebounds and three assists.

Jackie Young and Chelsea Gray were equally important to the team’s success, combining for 21 points in the victory.

While the Storm struggled against the reigning champions, Gabby Williams and Nneka Ogwumike did everything they could to help Seattle keep its 2024 season alive.

Williams scored 20 points, grabbed five rebounds and dished out three assists, while Ogwumike finished with 16 points, 10 rebounds and one assist.

Skylar Diggins-Smith and Ezi Magbegor also contributed 27 points, but Jewell Loyd finished with just nine points, well below her regular-season average of 19.7 points.

Now facing a strong New York team that finished the regular season with a 32-8 record, the Aces will still rely on Wilson and Plum against Liberty in the next round, a rematch of last year’s WNBA Finals.
