Minnesota Governor Tim Walz claimed during CBS News’ vice presidential debate that a woman in Georgia likely died as a result of the state’s “restrictive” abortion laws after the overthrow of Roe, despite doctors previously reporting such a story denounced it as ‘fear mongering’.

“There’s a young woman named Amber Thurman. She happened to be in Georgia, a state with restrictions. Therefore, she had to travel a long distance to North Carolina to try to get her care. Amber Thurmond died on that trip back and forth. The fact is, how can we as a nation say that your life and your rights, as fundamental as the right to control your own body, are determined by geography,” Walz said during the debate as he sparred with Vance over abortion . laws.

“There is a very real chance that if Amber Thurman had lived in Minnesota, she would still be alive today. That is why Roe vs. Wade is being reinstated,” he said.

Walz joined Ohio Sen. J.D. Vance in New York City on Tuesday evening, where the pair discussed key voter issues this election cycle, including the economy, immigration and abortion.

Walz’s comments come after ProPublica published an article last month blaming the deaths of two Georgia women, Amber Nicole Thurman and Candi Miller, on the overturning of Roe v. Wade and the state’s new abortion limits after the women in had undergone 2,022 chemically induced abortions. The Heartbeat Act states that “an abortion shall not be performed if the unborn child has a detectable human heartbeat, except in the case of a medical emergency or a medically futile pregnancy.”

Democratic Party members, including Vice President Kamala Harris, have cited their deaths as evidence of the need to expand abortion access following the Supreme Court’s 2022 Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization ruling.

“Good policy, logical policy, moral policy, human policy is about saying that a health care provider is only going to provide that care when you are about to die?” Harris said at a campaign event in Atlanta last month, citing Thurman’s death.

“I wasn’t surprised to see these pro-abortion media trying to blame Georgia’s pro-life laws, but in fact, Georgia’s law allows doctors to intervene to save women’s lives,” says Charlotte Lozier Institute Vice President and Director of Medical Affairs Dr. Ingrid Skop recently told Fox News Digital.

“I think the focus of the Democratic Party is on this abortion as a problem is just because the American people don’t understand the laws. Women are often affected by abortions. There is no need for women to live their best lives. And of course it’s the fear mongering and the lies that have led us to where we are today, where people even think there would be a reason to point fingers at the law.”

Rep. Rich McCormick, R-Ga., and state Rep. Mark Newton have also come out to say they do not believe Georgia’s laws had anything to do with Thurman’s death, but were instead caused by alleged complications from abortion pills, as doctors may have waited too long to intervene.

“We never deny a woman an abortion because it will harm her in some way. She will always be protected,” McCormick said in a recent interview with Fox News Digital.

“You have every right to an abortion, even with that heartbeat law,” he continued. “So let’s make that very clear now. When they say there are no exceptions, there is never a law in a state where there are no exceptions. That doesn’t exist. It just doesn’t work that way. The mother’s life is always protected .” That said, it doesn’t mean it’s easy to have an abortion just because you have a complication or something goes wrong.”
