Delaware State beats expectations in football opener in Hawaii

Delaware State couldn’t beat Hawaii, but the Hornets defiantly won their season opener on Saturday night.

DSU, trailing by 40 points, tied the game early in the second half, then Hawaii scored three touchdowns to win 35-14 in Honolulu.

The game was played in heavy winds due to Tropical Storm Hone before 12,206 spectators at the Clarence TC Ching Athletic Complex. The game started at 11:59 p.m. EDT.

Delaware State went 1-10 in 2023, giving them little chance to challenge the FBS-level Rainbow Warriors, especially after dealing with travel issues.

The team missed its nonstop flight from JFK Airport on Tuesday due to a bus accident. The travel groups were split up on several flights that took everyone there on Wednesday and Thursday, throwing the game preparations into disarray.

But DSU got on the board with 12 seconds left in the first half. Sophomore quarterback Marqui Adams ran 10 yards for the touchdown, capping a 9-play, 77-yard march that included completing five passes for 60 yards. DSU had totaled just 24 yards in seven series prior.

Jaden Sutton’s 6-yard TD run then closed out the first possession of the third quarter, giving DSU an even score at 14-14. The eight-play, 75-yard run included Adams’ 46-yard pass to Ryan Lee.

Hawaii then took the lead when quarterback Brayden Schager ran 15 yards for a TD, threw 29 yards to Dekel Crowdus for six points and closed out the scoring on a 1-yard run with 3:44 left.

Schager, a third-year starter, threw 17 of 34 passes for 203 yards with two touchdowns and ran for two more.

HEAVY TEST: DSU quest to improve football begins in Hawaii

Adams completed 17 of 28 passes for 156 yards and ran for 44 yards in the game.

Sutton’s 12 carries yielded 56 yards.

Hawaii finished with 331 total yards, compared to DSU’s 260. There were no turnovers in the game.

Delaware State now faces a long trip home and a short wait before Saturday’s game at Sacred Heart.
