As Sen. J.D. Vance, R-Ohio, and Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz faced off in the vice presidential debate in New York City on Tuesday, both sides took to social media to show support for their candidate, with Democrats Vance checked at every point. .

Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg claimed that Walz was “stating facts” and that Vance was “unaware” that U.S. energy production had increased.

“Remarkable to see JD Vance pretending to be unaware that US energy production has increased and that US production is currently up dramatically, much higher than under Trump. Glad Tim Walz is getting the facts straight here,” Buttigieg wrote on X.

David Plouffe, campaign manager and senior White House adviser for Barack Obama and senior adviser to Kamala Harris for the president, called on Vance and said Walz scored his strongest victory on the immigration portion.

“Gov. Walz is dominating J.D. Vance in the immigration exchange with undecided voters in a Western battleground state. He reminds these voters that Donald Trump only built 2 percent of the wall and that Mexico did not pay a dime in the strongest moment of the debate,” Plouffe wrote.

California Governor Gavin Newsom also fact-checked Vance, saying that if he and Donald Trump were elected, American families would pay high costs.

Sen. Chris Murphy, D-Conn., said Vance made “false” claims about the Middle East.

“Vance says Trump has restored deterrence in the Middle East. Completely untrue. Iran and its allies did not fire on US troops UNTIL Trump became president,” Murphy wrote.

Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer applauded Walz for “standing up for American workers.”

“Michigan remembers what happened under Donald Trump. Hundreds of thousands of jobs were lost across all sectors, including manufacturing. The Biden-Harris administration was critical in bringing jobs back to Michigan.”

Sen. Mark Kelly, D-Ariz., claimed that Trump and Vance’s “Project 2025 agenda will raise costs for Arizona families while giving more tax breaks and power to big corporations.”

“@KamalaHarris and @Tim_Walz will lower costs and build an economy that works for all Americans.”

Project 2025 refers to a series of conservative policy proposals from the Heritage Foundation and has turned into a right-wing “boogeyman”-style Democratic talking point and fodder for Trump critics.

Democratic Illinois Governor JB Pritzker wrote on X that “housing and homeownership will be most accessible under a Harris-Walz administration.”

“They want to equip the next generation of homeowners with the support they need to achieve the American dream.”

Former Hillary Clinton aide Brian Fallon also took aim at Vance’s response to questions about the 2020 election.

“A top moment of the debate comes in the closing minutes: Vance refuses to say Trump lost the 2020 election. ‘Damn non-answer’ says Walz,” he wrote on X.
