International captain Mike Weir plays daringly with foursome teams during the Presidents Cup on Saturday

MONTREAL — Hoping for a turnaround in the situation, international captain Mike Weir sent out the same eight players from the morning for the afternoon celebrations at the Presidents Cup.

It is the first time in the history of the Presidents Cup that this has happened.

That means that even after the Internationals drop the morning session, the quartet of Jason Day, Min Woo Lee, Ben An and Christiaan Bezuidenhout will sit in front of the home team at Royal Montreal all day. Lee, captain for the first time, has not played since Thursday afternoon.

An, Day and Bezuidenhout were all part of the winning alternate shot teams on Friday that took the Internationals to an unlikely sweep that leveled the score at halftime.

The American and international teams will compete in four foursomes matches on Saturday afternoon.

It’s a bold move from Weir, who said he stuck to the plan he set out at the start of the day even after his team lost the session with the better ball 3-1 and are now two points behind on aggregate state, 8-6. Foursomes has historically been a more difficult format for the home team; Before Friday, when the Internationals claimed their first foursome win since 2005, they had been outscored by 33 points by the Americans in that format since 2007.

“They’re playing well,” Weir said. “We love the matchups, we love the combinations, and we’re going to run with it.”

All three Canadians will be sent off before noon – even though Taylor Pendrith and Mackenzie Hughes were statistically the two worst players on the court Saturday morning. Together, Hughes and partner Corey Conners made just one birdie in the morning fourballs.

US captain Jim Furyk will reheat three of his original foursomes combinations from Friday, with only Collin Morikawa (formerly with Sahith Theegala) and Sam Burns (did not play) teaming up in alternating shots for the first time. Theegala will take part in both sessions on Saturday after struggling mightily with his ball striking on Friday.

Bradley, meanwhile, was the second-best player from tee to green on Saturday morning (during what was a 4-and-3 loss to Tom Kim and Si Woo Kim) but will spend the afternoon on the couch.

At this stage of the competition, it appears that both captains are focusing on their core players.

Furyk will use Scottie Scheffler, Xander Schauffele, Collin Morikawa and Patrick Cantlay – three of the four best players in the world – for all five sessions. Weir will go the distance with Hideki Matsuyama, Sungjae Im and Adam Scott, their top three automatic qualifiers, as well as Canadians Conners and Pendrith.
