Cam Taylor-Britt eats his words about Jayden Daniels and Commanders after loss: ‘We had a setback today’

Cam Taylor-Britt has no regrets about his comments about Jayden Daniels and the Washington Commanders offense that made headlines earlier this week.

But after Daniels’ near-perfect performance, which led to a 38-33 victory over the Cincinnati Bengals on Monday night, Taylor-Britt didn’t hesitate to admit he was wrong.

“Yeah, I can eat my words, absolutely,” he said. “We had an L today.”

Taylor-Britt criticised the Commanders’ attack and Daniels in particular ahead of the game, saying the Commanders “don’t let him do much” and “keep it very simple for him.”

“They’re moving guys around here and there, but just keeping it really simple for him,” Taylor-Britt said before the game. “I heard his pass percentage is really high, but he’s just throwing short routes. A few in-between things, quick throws.”

In Taylor-Britt’s defense, Daniels entered Monday night’s game averaging the second-fewest completion yards of any quarterback in the league.

On Monday night, though, Daniels was outstanding, going 21 of 23 for 254 yards and throwing for two touchdowns — including a stunning corner shot to Terry McLaurin in the fourth quarter that all but sealed their victory at Paycor Stadium.

Daniels threw his other touchdown pass to an offensive lineman, the first of his career, and ran for one himself. His 91.3% completion rate was the highest for a rookie quarterback since the merger.

Neither team committed a turnover or punt all night, something the league hasn’t seen since 1940. The Commanders also didn’t have to punt at all in their Week 2 win over the New York Giants.

While Taylor-Britt didn’t regret his comments, which he said were taken a bit out of context, Bengals coach Zac Taylor isn’t happy about them in hindsight.

“That’s not what we do,” Taylor said of Taylor-Britt’s comments. “We praise our own team, praise the other team. We don’t have to take shots like that. That team hasn’t scored in two weeks. They’ve scored on every possession the last two weeks. I have a ton of respect for what they’re doing out there.”

Taylor-Britt had four total tackles in the loss for the Bengals, who are now 0-3 for the first time since 2019. The Bengals will face the Carolina Panthers next weekend.

Knowing Taylor-Britt, who has a knack for throwing message board material at opponents throughout the season, it’s unlikely Daniels’ performance will make him bite his tongue in the future.
