Selena Gomez Takes on ‘Childless Cat Ladies’ Steve Martin and Martin Short

Father-son duo Eugene Levy and Dan Levy took the stage to host the Emmy Awards Sunday night in matching tuxedos, black-rimmed glasses and prominent eyebrows. And they started by making sure viewers knew they weren’t stand-up comedians, ostensibly to temper expectations.

“I wouldn’t even call us hosts,” Dan Levy said. “More like actors acting like hosts, which is a big gamble for us. But if it goes well tonight, my name will be pronounced Lev-y, not Lee-vy.”

“And if it goes wrong, my name will be pronounced Martin Short,” added Eugene Levy.

That prediction turned out to be a little too accurate when the first presenters of the evening took the stage, Only murders in the building stars Steve Martin, Martin Short and Selena Gomez, and quickly outshone the real hosts with some harder-edged pieces that resonated better with the celebrity audience

“Steve, I just want to tell you that it is an honor for me to work with someone who looks like he fell and can’t get up,” Short joked.

Then came Martin, who added, “And let me just say what an honor it is for me to work with someone who looks like a former female tennis champion.”

But Gomez had the best line when she joked, “And let me just say what an honor it is to work with two guys who this far away from childless cat ladies.”

As for the Schitt’s Creek stars, their best joke came at the expense of the most nominated “comedy series” of the year, The Bear.

“I know some of you might be expecting us to be joking about whether The Bear is really a comedy,” said Eugene Levy. “But in the true spirit of The Bear“We’re not going to make any jokes.”

That sentence certainly brought a fit of laughter from the series’ Emmy-nominated star, Ayo Edebiri.
