Google’s Pixel 9 Pro Fold becomes a $1,799 nightmare if you bend it the wrong way, latest durability test reveals

The Pixel 9 Pro Fold is being marketed by Google in some regions as the world’s thinnest and most durable foldable smartphone, featuring a design that differs drastically from the first-generation Pixel Fold and packing some impressive hardware specs. Unfortunately, reducing the thickness of the flagship is going to introduce a few chinks in the armor, and as one YouTuber clearly demonstrates, bending the Pixel 9 Pro Fold the wrong way can be a very costly mistake.

One major design flaw of the Pixel 9 Pro Fold is that Google placed an antenna line on a specific part of the primary display, making it easy to snap

The Pixel 9 Pro Fold has landed in the hands of Zach from JerryRigEverything , and most readers already know what rite of passage this flagship will undergo. Google is using a solid aluminum construction for its latest handset, suggesting that the company has spared no expense in making its second-generation foldable smartphone as premium as possible. However, when it comes to keeping dust from creeping into the internals, the advertising giant will have to redesign it for the next model, while also evaluating its IP68 rating.

Should any grit or dust find its way into the Pixel 9 Pro Fold, you’ll immediately notice an audible creaking sound from the hinge, which can be annoying to hear if your device suffers a similar fate in the future. Dust getting into the tiny crevices should be the least of your worries, though, as if the content creator were to perform the bend test, the Pixel 9 Pro Fold cracked without much effort, smashing its larger display in the process. This turn of events reveals that Google has done little to improve upon the design of the first-generation model, and that’s thanks to the company’s addition of an antenna line that runs from top to bottom of the display.

It’s anyone’s guess why Google would put this antenna in a device that’s already remarkably thin, but the company has said that the Pixel 9 Pro Fold has a sturdier hinge compared to the previous generation, but made no mention of its overall structural rigidity. Hopefully the company’s design and engineering team takes this durability test seriously and ensures the third iteration won’t succumb quite so quickly. For those who haven’t yet received their Pixel 9 Pro Fold, be sure to check out the video above so you know exactly what to expect.
