Why is Kansas Football playing UNLV at Children’s Park Stadium?

Kansas football once again heads to a neutral site to take on UNLV in a Big 12-Mountain West matchup.

But this time there is no chance of a trophy and the match is considered a home game.

How does that work?

The Jayhawks (1-1) travel to Kansas City, Kansas on Friday to take on the Rebels (2-0) in their second game of the season at Children’s Mercy Park due to the ongoing renovation of David Booth Kansas Memorial Stadium.

It’s the first time since last year’s Guaranteed Rate Bowl in Phoenix, when the Jayhawks defeated the Rebels 49-36. Kansas will also be looking to get back on track after a Week 2 loss to Illinois, a surprise loss that knocked the Jayhawks out of both the US LBM Coaches Poll and the AP Top 25 poll.

Why is Kansas vs UNLV played at Children’s Mercy Park?

While neutral site games are becoming more common during the non-conference portion of the American football season, that’s not why the Jayhawks and Rebels will play in Kansas City at Children’s Mercy Park on Friday.

The reason is the ongoing construction and renovation of Gateway District and David Booth Kansas Memorial Stadium in Lawrence. Kansas made the announcement back in January, after the 2023 season.

“This plan for the 2024 season has an incredible number of benefits for our student-athletes, our fans and supporters, our campus partners and the Kansas Football program. While we are disappointed that we will not be able to play in Lawrence, we ultimately want to create the best possible experience for everyone involved, and playing two games at Children’s Mercy Park and four games at GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium allows us to do that,” Kansas Director of Athletics Travis Goff said in a statement in January.

“It was exciting to see construction begin in earnest on the Gateway District and David Booth Kansas Memorial Stadium in Lawrence. This decision allows construction to continue on schedule while also benefiting the overall budget for the project and the fan experience in 2024.”
