It was another concussion that Tagovailoa suffered on national television that gave players and fans pause. Players like former Dallas Cowboys wide receiver Dez Bryant, Super Bowl champion kicker Lawrence Tynes and Hall of Famer Shannon Sharpe wondered if Tagovailoa should reconsider his future.

Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel was asked after the team’s loss to the Buffalo Bills if he thought it was safe for Tagovailoa to play football.

“I think from a medical standpoint, I don’t address things that I have much less expertise in. I’m just there to support my teammate, like I said,” McDaniel told reporters. “I don’t think it’s appropriate to predict things that I don’t have the expertise in in my non-expertise area.

“I think we’ll get more information tomorrow about where Tua is. He can spend a fair amount of time being evaluated, then we’ll have conversations and make progress if necessary. Like the rest of his teammates, who he walked around the locker room with and made contact as a leader, tried to keep the guys on their toes, he’ll be in the office tomorrow to get the proper care.”

Tagovailoa appeared to have suffered a concussion in the 2022 game against the Bills, but it was determined he suffered a back injury that caused him to stumble after hitting his head on the ground during a game.

Just days later, in Week 4 against the Bengals, Tagovailoa was thrown to the turf of Paycor Stadium in Cincinnati. A disturbing scene unfolded as his hands behaved in a way that sometimes accompanies head injuries that cause the fingers to curl.
