HAMDEN, CT (WFSB) – Rapper Fatman Scoop, whose real name is Isaac Freeman, died Friday night while performing in Hamden after suffering a medical emergency.

According to Sean Grace, chief of staff for the city of Hamden, Freeman was taken to the hospital after an incident occurred on stage.

Birch Michael, who was Freeman’s tour manager for seven years, was the first to confirm the artist’s death on social media.

“You taught me how to be the Man I am today. I love you Scoop, thank you so much for everything you have given me,” said Michael.

Freeman’s family posted an official statement on his Instagram, calling Freeman a beacon of life, both on stage and in real life.

The Reminisce Fest festival, where Freeman was scheduled to perform this year, also reported on social media about his death.

“It is with the deepest sadness that we at Reminisce have received the devastating news of the tragic passing of the legendary Isaac Freeman III, known to us all as Fatman Scoop. This loss has left us all heartbroken.

Scoop was scheduled to perform at this year’s Reminisce Festival, and his absence will be deeply felt by all. He was not only one of our most popular artists, he was a beloved member of the Reminisce family. His energy, talent and infectious spirit will be missed more than words can express.

Over the next few days, we’ll discuss the best ways to honor his memory and celebrate the incredible life and legacy of this brilliant artist.

Rest in peace our friend. You will remain in our hearts forever.

Freeman, 53, performed at Hamden’s Town Center Park as part of the summer concert series.

The performance, which started at 7:15 p.m., was performed by Freeman, among others.

Hamden Mayor Lauren Garrett said, “On behalf of the City of Hamden, I offer my sincere condolences to the family and friends of Isaac Freeman, better known as Fatman Scoop. He was an incredible artist with a huge following, as evidenced by the thousands of fans who came out to see what would be his final performance at Hamden Town Center Park.

I am grateful to the public and our paramedics who tried to provide life-saving aid. For anyone who is struggling to process and grieve Isaac’s loss, especially after witnessing the tragedy that unfolded at Town Center Park, we are hosting a bereavement counseling session with our social worker.”

Details are still emerging about the emergency and Freeman’s death.
