What’s Open and Closed During the 2024 Labor Day Holiday?

Monday is Labor Day, and many places you might want to visit will be closed for the holiday. Nearly all non-essential state and federal government offices will be closed Monday in honor of Labor Day.

Labor Day began as a national holiday in the late 1800s. In 1894, Labor Day was adopted as a holiday by 23 states. That year, Congress made Labor Day a national holiday.

According to the Department of Labor, “Labor Day is an annual celebration of the social and economic achievements of American workers. The holiday traces its origins to the late 19th century, when labor activists pushed for a federal holiday to recognize the many contributions of workers to the strength, prosperity, and well-being of America.”

Since the holiday falls at the end of summer, it is one of the busiest travel holidays of the year. Not only will most places that receive visitors, such as hotels, gas stations, and airports, be open, but expect them to be busy.

The Transportation Security Administration expects this year’s Labor Day travel weekend to be the busiest ever for the nation’s airports.

While many government buildings will be closed, many things will remain open.
