Texas coach Steve Sarkisian on QB’s prospects

Texas American football coach Steve Sarkisian said quarterback Quinn Ewers suffered a torn muscle during Saturday’s 56-7 win over UTSA at Royal-Memorial Stadium.

The severity of that tension remains uncertain, he said.

“It’s a question of how serious it is and how long it lasts, but that’s it,” Sarkisian said after the game. “There’s nothing — you know, we don’t think it’s structural or broken.”

Ewers appeared to be struggling with his right hand early in the match, but suffered an abdominal injury that eventually led to his departure.

However, he played well before the injury, completing 14 of his 16 pass attempts for 185 yards and two touchdowns, plus one interception.

Sarkisian said running backs coach Tashard Choice first noticed Ewers’ injury after he threw a pass to Gunnar Helm.

“It was so strange, you know, it was a no-contact deal,” Sarkisian said.

“We called a run, and he turned around and looked at me eight away. He just pointed to his stomach and then took the knee.”

Arch Manning stepped up remarkably well in Ewers’ absence. The redshirt freshman and former top overall recruit threw for 223 yards, completing 9 of his 12 attempts and reaching the end zone four times. He also broke away for a 67-yard rushing touchdown.

Texas also got valuable reps for third-string QB Trey Owens in a blowout win. The true freshman made his first career appearance, going 2-of-4 through the air for 19 yards.

The Longhorns (3-0) play one more non-conference game next week against Louisiana-Monroe before SEC play begins the following week at home against Mississippi State.
