Fleur Jong jumps to victory

Dutch Fleur Jong improved her own Paralympic record and took gold in the women’s T64 long jump final.

Jong jumped to 6.53 meters, while her compatriot Marlene van Gansewinkle took silver with a personal best of 5.87 meters and American Beatriz Hatz came third with 5.38 meters.

Jong, who won gold at Tokyo 2020, said: “It feels really, really good, especially with such a distance. It feels great to finally be able to show a full stadium what I can do. That was really cool.

“I felt like I wanted to scream with excitement all the time. But I tried to control myself as much as possible.

“Once it was over and I won, I wanted to celebrate with all the people who had come to support me.”

Elsewhere in athletics, refugee Paralympic team runner Guillaume Junior Atangan qualified for tonight’s semi-finals of the men’s 400m T11 after winning his heat with a personal best.

Atangan said: “My first race was very good. When I see where I come from, it was not so easy for me to be here, so I am very happy. I thank my God, my coach, my guide and everyone who is behind me.

“The semi-final is in the evening. They (the other athletes) are always very fast, so for the semi-final I have to give everything I have in my body to get (into) the final.”

First Para archery gold goes to China

China’s Chen Minyi became the first Para-archery gold medalist at Paris 2024 after beating Czech Republic’s Pultar Musilova Sarka in the women’s individual W1 event.

Chen, who won two gold medals at Tokyo 2020, took the lead after the first end and never relinquished it. Czech Tereza Brandtlova took bronze.

Sarka was aiming for her first gold medal after taking silver in two events at Tokyo 2020, both times behind Chen.

After beating Sarka 136-129, Chen said: “She is much more competitive than Tokyo. I believe she is quite good this time and works very hard. In normal life she is very outgoing and she is a good friend of mine.”

“I am very excited. I never thought I could win this title again. It is a great happiness for me to win this title.”

Canada bounces back with crucial win

The Canadian women’s team bounced back from their first wheelchair basketball defeat to China by beating Great Britain 63-54 in their Group A match at the Bercy Arena.

Arinn Young was the top scorer in her bid to reclaim the Paralympic title from the US in Paris.

Young said: “We really needed this win today to prepare us for the rest of the group games. I’m so proud of my team. That was a huge team win.

“Yes, I scored the most, but I trusted everyone on the pitch – my whole bench. Everyone was my hype man, and that’s why we won today.

“I just wanted to be a calm, cool, collected athlete, and I think people really count on that.

“We, Canada, like to play in space and lure them out. I think we did that today.”

Ryley Batt scores 41 tries for Australia

In wheelchair rugby, Ryley Batt scored 41 tries to lead Australia to a 53-49 victory over Denmark at the Champ-de-Mars Arena. The reigning world champions have now won two consecutive group games after losing their opening match to reigning Paralympic champions Great Britain.

Australia is aiming to finish on the top podium in Paris after finishing fourth in Tokyo 2020.
