PHILADELPHIA (CBS) — After going three weeks without a high temperature of 90 degrees Fahrenheit or higher, the Philadelphia region reached that temperature for the 32nd time this year on Wednesday.

Now the weather is cooling as a cold front moves through the area, bringing scattered showers and storms to the Delaware Valley.

Some storms Wednesday night through Thursday morning could become severe, with damaging winds the primary concern. The severe storms will move through the region until 2 a.m. and could produce flooding, rain, and large hail. The risk of tornadoes is low and unlikely.

The storms are moving west to east toward Mercer and Ocean Counties in New Jersey, from the Lehigh Valley and Poconos in Pennsylvania.

The threat of extreme weather will diminish as the storms move southeast through Wednesday evening.

Wednesday afternoon’s storms will be preceded by a cold front moving across the region, bringing more pleasant conditions into the second half of the week.

On Thursday and Friday it will be difficult to exceed 21 degrees, while the sky will be mostly cloudy.

Another storm system will bring scattered showers and storms to the region on Saturday. These storms are expected to last until the afternoon and could continue Saturday night into early Sunday morning.

The last unofficial day of summer, Labor Day, looks dry, but it will be chilly, with temperatures reaching over 70 degrees Fahrenheit.
