Binalong secures world golf first – PGA of Australia

The 36-hole championship at Binalong Golf Club in the NSW Southern Tablelands is proudly supported by Destination NSW, the New South Wales Government’s tourism and events agency. It is a first for professional men’s golf in Australia and worldwide.

Golf NSW chief executive Olivia Wilson said the concept of a professional men’s tournament on sand greens was a first for Australia and would attract a lot of interest. She added that the style of play required to play on sand greens was still taking some getting used to.

“Golf on sand greens plays an important role in the Australian golf landscape, particularly in rural communities, and it would be great to showcase this side of our sport,” she said.

“Playing and putting on sand is a very different experience for many players. There are fundamental differences between landing approach shots and knowing how to ‘smooth’ a putting line.

“If a player is in any doubt about what to do, there are plenty of locals willing to give free advice on the correct way to chip, smooth a line and even hit a putt,”

Ms Wilson added that sports fans curious about golf on sand greens could watch live on 7Plus, via the Channel Seven network and the Sports Entertainment Network, SEN, to watch the action live.

“It is great to be able to follow the final round of a tournament live, but because many people are curious about playing and playing on sand surfaces, we expect the broadcast to be well received.”

Nick Dastey, general manager of tournaments and relations on the PGA of Australia’s global tour, said the men’s World Sand Greens Championship would be a great opportunity to showcase this particular style of golf.

“Australia’s unique environment provides a variety of terrain and weather conditions across its vast landscapes,” he said.

“Playing on sand greens will present a special challenge for a professional event, one that will undoubtedly highlight the creative talents of our players.

“The World Sand Greens Championship is a fantastic way to kick off a great summer of golf on the 2024/25 Challenger PGA Tour of Australasia.”

The location

Binalong Golf Club has a long and rich history. The club’s original nine-hole layout, established in 1857, was carved through the middle of a now-defunct horse racing track.

This 18-hole, par-72 course is situated 500 metres above sea level and is regarded as one of the finest examples of a sand green in regional New South Wales.

Binbalong is located 37km north-west of Yass, approximately one hour from Canberra and three hours from Sydney. It is a hub for sporting activities and an important part of the surrounding community.
