The star of The hangover trilogy warned that most voters don’t bond with celebrities or care about their endorsements the way celebrities and the DNC think they do, during a recent interview with Variety.

“As a small town kid from North Carolina … I wish the DNC would distance itself from the celebrities a little bit,” Galifianakis told the magazine on the Only murders in the building Season 4 premiere in Hollywood. The interview took place the same night that Vice President Kamala Harris accepted the Democratic presidential nomination at the Democratic National Convention.

“It works to a certain extent, but they have to win over rural America,” Galifianakis said of celebrity endorsements of politicians. “Hollywood cares so much about it, and that’s a problem. Actors are people too, and they’re citizens too, but I’m more on the small-town side than the Hollywood side. That’s just me.”

The DNC had a star-studded lineup at its Chicago gathering.

The final night of the four-day fest featured Pink, a singer who used her music to advocate for LGBTQ causes, and The Chicks, who went from atop the charts to the center of album burn parties after speaking out against former President George W. Bush. Musicians Common and John Legend used their platforms to advocate for racial justice. Both took the stage at the event.

On the convention’s third night, Oprah Winfrey made a surprise appearance, while actors Tony Goldwyn and Mark Hamill were spotted in the audience. The former also spoke throughout the week. Also in attendance on Tuesday were director Spike Lee and actors Wendell Pierce and Sean Astin.

Back in Hollywood, comedian and actor Kumail Nanjiani told the outlet He has contacted the Harris-Walz campaign to ask if he would like to run for office.

“I’m going to be making videos to get people registered to vote. I might come out later,” he said. “It’s really unbelievable how I felt a month and a half ago and how I feel now. It’s really inspiring… This has given me faith in humanity. I just feel lighter and happier. I’m going to say that I’m fighting to stay hopeful and not get too optimistic or confident. There’s still a lot of work to do.”

The Republicans also invited people from Hollywood and the music industry to their event last month in Milwaukee.

They included model and rapper Amber Rose, singer-songwriter Lee Greenwood, British actor Russell Brand and reality star Savannah Chrisley. Their parents, Todd and Julie Chrisley, are in prison after being convicted of bank fraud and tax evasion.
