Xavier Worthy gives mother Nicky a touchdown ball on her birthday, ESPN spotlights a moving story

Xavier Waard gave his mother a birthday present Monday in front of millions of NFL fans.

During the fourth quarter of the Week 5 Monday Night Football game between the Kansas City Chiefs and the New Orleans Saints, the speedy rookie scored on a three-yard handoff from the tight end. Travis Kelce. Without hesitation, he ran to his mother, Nicky Jones, in the front row to hand her the game ball on her birthday.

ESPN’s Lisa Salters had a spotlight story ready for this exact moment.

“Xavier Worthy says his mother Nicky is his best friend. He says she got it when she was 18; so she really is his sister,” Salters said during the MNF broadcast. “He said, ‘Our relationship is very close. She meant everything to me. She has just been there for me every step of the way. We have that special bond. Talk all the time.”

“He was so happy that she was going to be at the game tonight because it’s her birthday. All he said to me, Joe (Buck), is how great it is now to take care of Mom, all because of football.

Worthy has made the most of his NFL opportunities during his rookie campaign. Through five matches the Texas product has four touchdowns to his name: two on the ground and two through the air. He has totaled six rushes for 42 yards while being used through the air with 15 receptions for 154 yards as a regular member of the Chiefs lineup.

It’s a continuation of what the do-it-all speedster was able to accomplish at the college level. He accounted for more than 2,700 receiving yards during his three seasons with the Longhorns and caught 26 touchdown passes. He will look to continue that effort while caring for his mother as he continues in his NFL career.
